Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

ART is the cornerstone of HIV treatment, consisting of a combination of medications that suppress the HIV virus to prevent disease progression and transmission. Early initiation of ART is strongly recommended for all PLHIV to improve health outcomes and quality of life. Regular monitoring of immune function and periodic reviews are essential to ensure the effectiveness and safety of ART. Starting ART is a personal decision, and Dr Mustafa is here to guide you through the process.

What is a s100 HIV specialist General Practioner Community Prescriber?

ART is classified as a “Section 100 (s100)” highly specialised drug under the National Health Act, meaning only GPs with advanced training and accreditation from the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM) can prescribe it. Dr Mustafa’s s100 accreditation ensures that you receive a high standard of HIV care.

Supporting Non-Medicare PLHIV

The Victorian HIV Treatment Program provides access to ART for individuals without Medicare through public hospital pharmacies or the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre. This program ensures that all PLHIV can receive the necessary treatment, regardless of their Medicare status. If accessing medication through a hospital pharmacy is challenging, please discuss alternative options with the pharmacy directly.

Understanding PrEP and PEP

  • Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): PrEP is a preventive measure for HIV-negative individuals at high risk of HIV exposure. It can be taken daily or around the time of potential exposure (event-driven PrEP). Dr Ebrahimjee can guide you in choosing the best PrEP regimen for your needs.
  • Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP): PEP is a 28-day course of HIV medication taken after a high-risk exposure to prevent HIV infection. It must be started within 72 hours of exposure. For urgent PEP needs, contact us or the PEP hotline at 1800 889 887.

Free HIV Home Test Kits

HIVTest.au provides free self-testing kits to individuals over 18 living in Australia. While these kits offer convenience, they may not detect recent infections (within the last three months). For recent exposures, consult a doctor for confirmatory testing.
